About Us

Tim Brown, PhD

Filming seabirds on Tatoosh Island, WA

Tim received a B.S. in biology from Wesleyan University in 1994. Over the next 5 years, he developed his skills as a researcher and technology consultant through a range of projects from database design to seabird research to the management of a 10,000-image photo library for a non-profit environmental organization. Tim received his PhD in biology from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2006. His graduate work, tracking and modeling army ant swarms, stemmed from an interest in understanding how natural systems solve complex computational problems. His research involved extensive field work, computer programming and modeling.

Since moving to Utah in 1999 to focus on his PhD work, Tim has served as a technical advisor on an array of video-based projects in both the academic and artistic community. He has served as a scientific consultant for print and film projects on army ants. Tim's photographs and video of army ants have been used widely in presentations and publications around the world.
